The Forged Coupon is a novella in two parts by Leo Tolstoy. Though he first conceived of the story in the late 1890s, he did not begin writing it until 1902. After struggling for several years, he finally completed the story in 1904; however, it was not published until some of Tolstoy's shorter works were collected and anthologized after his death in 1910. The story is divided into two parts. In Part I, schoolboy Mitya is in desperate need of money to repay a debt, but his father angrily denies him assistance. Dejected, under the instigation of a friend Makhin, Mitya simply changes a $2.50 note to read $12.50, but this one evil deed sets off a chain of events that affects the lives of dozens of others, when his one falsehood indirectly causes a man to murder a woman at the end of Part I, and then seek redemption through religion in Part II. Having written the novella in his dying years, after his excommunication, Tolstoy relishes the chance to unveil the "pseudo-piety and hypocrisy of organized religion." Yet, he maintains an unwavering belief in man's capacity to find truth, so the story remains hopeful, especially in Part II, which shows that good works can affect another as in a domino effect, just as evil does in Part I. The novella has also been translated with the title The Counterfeit Note and The Forged Banknote. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Fleet Cooper. Hailed as one of the world's supreme masterpieces on the subject of death and dying, Leo Tolstoy's "The Death of Ivan Ilyich" is the story of a worldly careerist, a high court judge who has never given the inevitability of his death so much as a passing thought. But one day, death announces itself to him, and to his shocked surprise he is brought face to face with his own mortality. How, Tolstoy asks, does an unreflective man confront his one and only moment of truth? This novella was the artistic culmination of a profound spiritual crisis in Tolstoy's life, a nine-year period following the publication of Anna Karenina during which he wrote not a word of fiction. A thoroughly absorbing and, at times, terrifying glimpse into the abyss of death, it is also a strong testament to the possibility of finding spiritual salvation. Also included in this volume are "The Forged Coupon," "After the Dance," "My Dream," "There Are No Guilty People," and "The Young Tsar." 1. Language: English. Narrator: George K. Wilson. Groupon’s Biggest Deal Ever is the exclusive, behind-the-scenes account of the incredible rise of discount coupon giant Groupon and the compelling story of its offbeat founder, Andrew Mason, as he created a juggernaut of online commerce and ignited a consumer revolution that is disrupting how people shop all over the world. Love him for saving you 50 percent on last night’s Indian dinner or hate him for cashing in big when he could be losing millions for merchants and investors alike, Mason - Groupon’s thirtysomething founder and CEO - made an incredible gamble when he turned down Google’s $6 billion buyout offer to go it alone. The experts thought he was insane. Groupon was little more than two years old and staffed from top to bottom with twentysomethings. The wild ride couldn’t last, but Mason thought otherwise, and with dreams of a potential IPO that could be massive, he liked his odds. But did he make the right decision, or did he blow a chance to continue to grow “the fastest growing company in history”? Is Mason an Internet genius, or is he sitting on another bubble that could burst at any moment? While everyone has an opinion on Groupon, Frank Sennett has written the only inside account. With exclusive access, interviews, and documents that no one outside of the company has seen or been able to report on, Groupon’s Biggest Deal Ever has every twist and turn from start-up to IPO and is the real story of Mason’s audacious gamble and the meteoric rise of Groupon from start-up to $16.7 billion online giant. 1. In this book, based on data gathered from more 2,500 grocery coupon users, the author shows how coupons can negatively impact the sales of the promoted product. Not only do coupons discourage the purchase of the product in question but under certain circumstances coupons actually encourage purchase of the competitor s product. In addition to several landmark revelations, the author introduces a new concept called devaluation effect, which captures negative feeling about the promoted product due to the coupon distribution. Thus, this study can substantially help marketing executives by making them aware of the potential negative effects of coupon-based promotions and thereby potentially preventing wastage of resources and channelizing them for better purposes. This book is written for customers like you and me, who has a casual interest in coupons. Tables and analyses are provided in the appendices for easy reading. The hardcore academic or researcher who is interested in advanced analysis can derive benefit from this study, which uses sophisticated tools such as multivariate analysis, factor analysis and structural equations modeling.
